When business is booming, more often than not there will come a time when you have to take on new employees, expand your operation, and even find a bigger and better office space. This is good, it means that your brand is moving forward and making a real impact in the competitive marketplace, but that doesn’t mean that you should simply pack up and leave before doing a fair bit of research and preparing well in advance. Most importantly, your aim should be to make as minimal of an environmental impact as possible while doing so.
This is important if you’re trying to showcase your brand’s values (people do care if their brands are eco-conscious) to your customers, and if you’re looking to move out in an efficient way while saving money in the process. With that in mind, here are the five tips to move your business in an eco-conscious way.
Recycle and repurpose before throwing it away
During the planning and packing phases, you’re going to realize that you don’t really need to move all of your office equipment, so naturally, you’re going to decide to throw a lot of your stuff away, especially if you’re buying new equipment for the new office space. While this is to be expected, and while you should get rid of the stuff you don’t need, it doesn’t mean that all of that waste should end up at a landfill.
Instead, why not tend to some thorough recycling, repurposing, and reusing beforehand? There are bound to be many recycling centers in your area where you can drop off your unwanted office equipment. Another great idea would be to turn to charities and other organizations that could make use of your stuff.
Pack in an eco-friendly way
Environmentalism is currently one of the most important and most powerful movements in the world, which naturally generates a lot of buzz and plenty of lucrative opportunities for entrepreneurs wanting to capitalize on the trend. Put simply, this means that there are moving companies out there that offer eco-friendly alternatives to packing boxes, bubble wrap, and other packing materials – alternatives you can use to make your move that much greener.
By using boxes made out of compostable materials, you can get rid of them without making a negative impact on the environment, or better yet, you can return them to the store or the moving company and thus support the environmental movement even further. If this doesn’t appeal to you, though, then you can simply use plastic containers that you can reuse time and time again, and you can also use old documents as makeshift bubble wrap.
Move everything at once
Moving a business is definitely not an easy task, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make the process as simple and straightforward as possible if you plan your loading and transportation processes. One of the biggest mistakes business leaders make is that they fail to move in a single trip, which causes delays and wastes extraneous amounts of resources while harming the environment. That said, business leaders in eco-conscious countries such as New Zealand are doing things quite differently.
In New Zealand, business leaders will find an affordable truck rental in Auckland and other business hubs that will allow them to choose the specifications of their trucks to fit their exact needs, load them up in a single go, and transport everything in a single trip. The key here is not only to find the right type of trucks to move efficiently but to also plot your route so that you get from point A to point B in as little time as possible.
Deep-clean the new office space
Before you settle in, there’s also the matter of prepping the new space for your arrival. It’s important that you tend to some deep-cleaning so that you can move in immediately and put everything in its place in one go. But that doesn’t mean that you should use toxic proprietary cleaners, instead, why not use simple yet effective homemade cleaning supplies that will do the job just fine, but won’t harm the environment in the process.
Unpack in a smart way
And finally, be sure to move into the new office space in an efficient and effective way. Make a thorough floorplan well before the moving date, and map out where every workstation and every piece of equipment should go. This will allow you to unload the truck(s) quickly and put everything in its place without wasting any resources.
When the time comes to move to new office space, it’s important to stay mindful of the environment. Even if conservation and preservation are not your primary motivators, it’s still a wise idea to stick to an eco-conscious moving strategy so that you can conduct an efficient move while making financial savings in the process.
