It can be such a drag to study. When you know that you should do it, but you don’t feel like it. Your tendency whenever you’re not motivated to study is to procrastinate. That means you delay doing such a task because you perceive it to be unpleasant. In turn, you revert to doing something that pleases you.
But being a student or learner that you are, you have to learn how to motivate yourself to study, especially if you have an important exam coming up. How do you do it? How do you keep your motivation alive to read your books or online study guide or take practice tests, among the most crucial things that you have to do? The following tips could guide you:
Establish your goals.
Your goals are the first motivators that should get you started. Essentially, you need to have a road map to know where you’re going. Then can you take steps so that you can get there? If it’s a long chapter about organic chemistry that you have to tackle, start by reading 5 pages during your 15-minute study sessions. You can break them into 6 parts, and before you know it, you shall have studied for 1 and a half hour already and have accomplished 30 pages. Make your goals realistic as well as challenging, and set short term and long term ones of them. Try posting your goal on the wall in front of your study desk, and it could be anything from your target GPA or exam score along with the name of the colleges that you want to enter.
Set up an efficient and comfortable study space.
Make it perfect, mainly because your environment can significantly affect the condition of your mental faculties. See to it that your books, papers, and computer are positioned accordingly on your desk and your essentials within reach. They may be your pen, markers, highlighters, calculator, flashcards and so on. If your desk is located in your room, do some decluttering because it will enhance your peace of mind and mental well-being. A cleanroom will activate your senses, making you more amiable to doing your studying tasks.
Just start doing it.
Muster your better senses to actually start your studying. Just do it, so to speak. It may be the hardest part, but when you commence on doing your task, you’ll find that it won’t be that tedious anymore. You can, in fact, get immersed in reading your books or taking your online practice tests that you wouldn’t notice the time. You’ll be surprised that 30 minutes have passed by and you’re precisely enjoying what you’re doing. Gaining momentum in your studying endeavor may have you wanting to do more of it.
Listen to lively music.
In the same way that your working out in the gym becomes astoundingly motivating when perky music is playing, you can surround yourself with the same when studying, too. It will pump up your energy, whether it’s pop, rock or classical music, among others.
Have a good pep talk with yourself.
This may seem silly, but it can work. Look at yourself in the mirror and give it a good talk. Express why you need to study and envision what your goals are. Monologue about what you want to achieve on the short and long term bases. Give your confidence a boost by telling yourself what amazing taste you have in fashion or how fantastic of a baker you are.
Give yourself a reward for every task that you have accomplished.
Have you finished reading a lengthy chapter about Civil Liberty? Or did you get a high score in your practice tests? Then give yourself a reward! For every challenging task that you got through, treat yourself to a doughnut and coffee in your favorite coffee shop or lunch in your preferred dinner. You can even watch a movie. Rewarding yourself will lighten your mood and condition you to like the otherwise tedious task of studying.
Write down how great it feels after completing a difficult task.
It will serve as a reminder for the next time that you are required to do something similar. This will boost your motivation and change your perception about studying as being boring. Keep a notebook for all your notes pertaining to this, and it will serve as your book of success for the future dragging and tricky things that you have to do.
The hardest part about rallying your motivation to study is to get started. The key to this is to set your goals, follow your routine, and prepare your environment. Block whatever excuses that pop up in your mind and just get started. You can go a long way from there if you just get on with it and consider these tips about how to motivate yourself to study.
