Alright! You decided to opt for learning how to write essays yourself instead of seeking help from the writing agencies. That is a great choice! So, in this post on tips for writing essays, you can expect to learn some cool ways that will make writing essays easy for you. Apart from talking about the more formulaic anatomy of an essay, I will talk about how you can plan for your essay, draw a content outline or identify the main ideas, and then write content for each element or idea from the content outline. So what are waiting for, let’s get started!
Reason Why You are Seeking Tips for Writing Essays
Essays are a very common form of assignments and therefore I presume you may have written a few, but if not, no worries. We will start from scratch. As an assignment, you may be required to write an essay to earn a scholarship or participate in a contest, or just a class assignment. Depending on the reason, you may want to choose what form your essay will take: Narrative essays typically are used to tell a tale, whereas Persuasive essays drive an argument home, and Exploratory essays help you pursue an idea. Whatever the case be, the foundational tips for writing essays remain the same. Let’s check them out.
Tip 1: What is the End Goal and Who is the Audience
Similar to what we discussed earlier, you need to know what is it that you need to achieve by writing the essay. Are you supposed to drive home a point of view, or share an experience, or just provide information? Depending on the goal, you will make choices while writing the essay. Also, closely related to the goal is the audience. If you know the audience of the essay, you may choose words, sentence structures, phrases, etc. accordingly. For example, if your audience is the younger lot, then the essay may explain things using their likes and lingo.
Tip 2: What is the Topic?
What matters is how much do you know about the topic of the essay. There also may be a situation that you are asked to identify a topic of your choice. In such a case, introspect, think and choose a topic close to your heart; something that you may have a strong opinion, and go for it. On the other hand, if the topic is assigned to you, check how much you know about it. If you think you do not know enough, then research and gain knowledge. Remember, writing a good essay needs work.
Another tip I would like to highlight is that you must read as much as is possible essays on similar topics. Basically, widen your horizon, know more than you need to, as this will give you the confidence to form your opinion, and that will reflect in your writing.
Tip 3: Outline Your Ideas
This is important! Outline what thought is coming to your mind. Plan your essay in your mind and order your thoughts. Prioritize the ideas you are more confident about over others. And then comes to an important tip: elevator pitching.
Write a sort of elevator tip which is a summary of key idea you would like to drive home. So, typically it will include your key arguments, and what is in it for me for the audience. It needs to be very condensed so that the key message is captured well.
Finally, if you are finding it difficult to form your own opinion, read what others are saying. While reading, you will start agreeing with some thoughts and disagreeing with others. You will be on your way to finding true ideas you would like to cover in your essay.
Tip 4: Write the Introduction
This is the point where you either loose or “hook” your learner. It is one of the most important parts of your essay. You introduce the reader to your main arguments, but you need to ensure that you start at something that grabs the attention of the learner. This can be a quote, or a hard-hitting fact related closely to the topic of the essay.
It is also a good practice to reveal the outline of your paragraph along with an introduction of any examples you plan to expand upon in the body of the essay.
Tip 5: Write the Body
All arguments you establish in the introduction, you detail those out with examples in the middle paragraphs. What is important here is to provide a rationale for your arguments so that you can influence the reader. So, you must start with the strongest argument, followed by others.
All the above tips involve writing, and here are some aspects you must bear in mind. Transitioning is very important as it builds a flow from one idea to another. It needs to be at all levels in your essay, starting from one sentence to another, to paragraph to paragraph, to one section to another. It is usually a joy to read an essay that flows well. A small example of a sentence to sentence flow can be (if you are discussing cheese in your essay) “There are 8 kinds of cheese. These are…”.
There can be many more tips on writing, but that is not exactly the focus of this blog, so I am touching upon the other most important ones.
Bad grammar can put the readers off. Ensure grammatically correct, passive voice, short sentences as they make a world of difference. I prefer writing simple, understandable sentences rather than using complex words to impress the reader. Having said that, it is important to choose the words you use correctly. For example, a word can be as good as a long-phrase and if that is the case, use the word rather than the phrase.
If you follow the above tips, most probably what you will write will be engaging and interesting for your readers. So, spend time and effort to adhere to the above tips, and you should be good.
Tip 6: Write the Conclusion
This will, just like the introduction, will be a summary of arguments. Just because you may have put forth the same arguments a few times in the essay, it will be prudent to carefully use words and sentence structures so it does not sound repetitive. Finally, it is best to finish the essay with a call to action, if applicable.
Tip 7: Practice, and More Practice
All the tips in this blog may sound great, but these are not easy to implement if you are not in a habit to develop your thoughts for presentation to an audience. It takes a lot of practice to have a decent copy out. So, practice no end, but of course, start publishing at a stage and edit your copy multiple times so that it does not have elements that may put off your readers.
Make a Choice
Phew! It can be tiring and time-consuming to implement these tips. So, if you are short on time, keep practicing but outsource the task, if you can, to wow essay writing services. You can google and find many native writers who can do your work within your budgets and time frame. This will ensure that you do not lose out on any current opportunities because of a lack of practice. Happy writing!
