What sparked your passion for music?

My passion for music came from my family and James Brown. James Brown was an inspiration to me as I was growing up, and I actually got the chance to tour with him when I was with the Dazz Band. It was really a dream come true to tour with and become close friends with my childhood idol. James eventually became the godfather to my twin boys, and we remain very close friends to this day. My family also ignited my passion for music from a very young age. Growing up in a family that produced Gold and Platinum Records for nearly two decades may have been the reason why I was so drawn to music.

How do you think music can benefit the world?

What would life be like without any music at all? This is a question that I like to ask people. The truth is, the world would be a chaotic mess without music. Music soothes the savage beast in all of us. Music is the healing force of the world. It changes lives with its healing vibrations, brings peace to the soul and its sounds reaches every part of the planet.

What would you say has influenced your music in the past and present?

There are many things that influence music in my life. The people I meet, my children, and most of all love, love of life and being in love! Emotions play a big part in the music that I make. Being heartbroken helps me write songs that people can understand and relate to who have experienced the same pains. Being in love allows me to write happy songs that uplift people. I was also heavily influenced by Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, and of course, my mother.

What are some of the successes and challenges that you’ve had in this industry?

My successes culminate in the music I make that people enjoy and being on a stage anywhere in the world. Many people do not see the struggles of musicians and celebrities. The music industry is a constant rollercoaster ride that can be very exhausting at times. Musicians and Celebrities are humans too, and we are all prone to the same mistakes, challenges, and struggles. As a musician, I have struggled as any other person would. My challenges have been many, but I have learned to overcome it all.

Are you currently working on any projects?

Yes! I have a benefit concert on August 31, 2018, in Hollywood, California at the Music Box (formerly the Fonda Theater). Proceeds for this benefit concert will be going to the MusiCares foundation to assist in the aid of musicians in need. I will also be releasing my new CD at “A Night of Love and Soul”.

Why did you choose MusiCares as the beneficiary for your charity concert?

MusiCares has helped me in the past when I was down on my luck. Musicians are overlooked at times, as we are seen in the public eye and less vulnerable. Everyone has experienced bad times in their lives. And, I feel it is my opportunity to be able to give back.

A friend and ally of the music community, MusiCares was established by the Recording Academy to safeguard the health and well-being of all music people. A four-star charity and safety net in times of need, MusiCares offers confidential preventative, recovery, and emergency programs to address financial, medical and personal health issues. By supporting them, it ensures that they are able to continue in carrying out their mission in helping the music community to have the resources and support they need.

What is your interest in bringing/expanding music to China?

I want to bring world peace through music and the Grammys. My goal is to help China become the catalyst for inclusion in all Asian music. I want the people of Asia to see how creating and sharing their unique sounds with the world can benefit everyone. With China being the most densely populated country in the world, it is the perfect place to gather different cultures of music.
