Why Diversity Matters

Many people consider artificial intelligence or AI to be our automated future. We have heard that it will take Diversity in all aspects of life is something that is on the forefront of all Americans minds. With the protests of June 2020, the recent rise of hate crimes against Asian Americans, and the MeToo movement, we are in desperate need of inclusion.
No field feels this time crunch harder than the business field. With historic exclusion rates, business has only recently opened up some to minorities. The current rates are still less than impressive but hopefully innovation will help change that soon.
Diversity in businesses brings many real benefits with companies in the top 25% of diversity receiving benefits such as 27% better average value creation and a 21% likelihood to outperform on profitability.
Diversity not only brings in bottom line benefits but the majority of corporate executives say that it’s a “social responsibility” to include people from all backgrounds. An embracement of diversity brings a positive increase in ideas, innovation, and change to a company as well.
The lack of diversity is due to the biased recruiting process. With an average seven seconds spent looking at a resume, your career trajectory depends on the byline of your portfolio. If a recruiter does not have an instant connection with who you are then you will not move forward in the process.
This needs to change if we want to have any chance of increasing diversity within the business community. The influence of human bias is simply too strong to remain indebted to human recruiters. With the collaboration of humans and science we can create a recruiting system that is totally unbiased.
Through AI, we have a chance at not only welcoming diversity, but creating a system where we can ensure the best person gets the job position. However, in order to do that we need to take the human error out of programming. This means that we must clean up our biased data.
The main reason why we keep getting bias errors in AI recruiting software is that we have feeding it bad data. Just like us, AI is what it “eats.” In order to clean up our data, we need to remove indicators like race, age, and gender to eliminate physical bias.
The road to diversity has not been an easy one for those impacted minorities. They should not have to keep fighting to have a basic right like a job that they have worked for and deserve.
