Even though many organizations have the intention of working on achieving the best performance, they often overlook the concept of contamination control. They know that the biggest factor in constant wear of the machinery is the invisible particles. They do not present themselves on the surface and aren’t seen easily by the people handling them. With each passing year, there is a growing need for new and improved cleaning and maintenance practices. That is why it is so important for you to adopt strategies for contamination control and planned oil cleanliness.
Contamination Control Strategies:
The false notion that cleanliness is a tough job makes companies hesitant to indulge in it. They consider it a waste of time and resources. The Keep-It-Clean-Stupid principle, or popularly known as “kicks”, is a strategy applied to motivate the company into cleaning. The kick signifies ‘kicking the bad habits.
1. Spread awareness
The most crucial and long-lasting strategy regarding oil cleanliness is to spread awareness about contamination control. Your organization should be taught about the importance and virtues of cleanliness. Apart from that, they should be instructed on how to achieve that cleanliness in joint workshops so they are all on the same page.
2. Standardize your work
The aim of standardizing your work is to keep the tags as transparent as clear as possible. Use ISO codes to signify the reliability which your company promises so that if your reliability has to be probed, these standard codes will be a direct indicator. It is important to track the cleanliness progress of each machine by placing tags on them. For each equipment, you must establish cleanliness targets using the ISO standards. Subsequently, compare the target set by ISO for cleanliness codes with current ISO fluid cleanliness.
3. Keep track
To monitor the cleanliness progress, you can install onsite particle counters which will monitor the cleanliness promptly. The cleanliness is marked in metrics which will be asked by the regulators so it is important to keep track of the numbers.
4. Use colored tags to show status
Placing colored tags on the oils is a good idea. This way you can keep track of which oil has been cleaned and which phase is it on. You can use green, yellow and red tags to denote the contamination level of an oil sample. Red denotes a highly contaminated oil sample, yellow means the oil is in the process of cleaning but not fully clean whereas green shows that the oil has been cleaned.
5. Provide suitable equipment
The ingression of contaminants should be cut down at all costs. To do that, you need to upgrade the filtration regularly and pass oils through strict filtration regulations. Portable filtration systems and carts are useful for fluids that remain stationary.
6. Develop inspection procedures
Workshops are important procedures when it comes to oil cleanliness. You must notify the oil suppliers and parts suppliers regarding the cleanliness of the oil so they are kept aware. These inspection procedures will help to provide a structure to planned oil cleanliness. All the steps will be in one place and if you skip any, you can trace back your steps to fix the error.
The monitoring program includes parts that must not be forgotten during the implementation phase. They include monitoring of the oil’s cleanliness and the oil analysis results. When you deem necessary, carry out onsite testing of the fluid to give a quick result. Online portable particle counters can give an accurate result, as well as filter patch testing. To obtain the optimum level of the monitoring program, you must stay in close contact with the oil analysis laboratory.
7. Give incentive
Last, but definitely not the least, give awards and incentives for oil cleanliness so that the staff is motivated. Once the target has been achieved, celebrate sustained contamination control successes with your staff. Awards don’t have to be super expensive; you can reward the person with donuts or a tiny badge, it is the thought that counts.
Oil cleanliness should be planned and executed in an organized manner. The contamination control strategies have to be followed properly in order for the oil to be kept in good shape. Contamination of any kind can be harmful to industrial oils. For optimal performance and best results, trust the professionals and quality filtration systems of reliable brands.
