Erectile dysfunction means that a man’s genitals are not hard enough to have sex. Men cannot have or keep erections. The medical term is erectile dysfunction (ED).
ED is not the same as premature ejaculation.
The main causes of Erectile Dysfunction are:
Vascular (vascular) disease – An erection occurs when blood collects in the shaft of the penis. Vascular disease can limit the amount of blood flowing to the penis. Both can cause problems with erections.
Vascular disease is the most common medical cause of erectile dysfunction.
Nerve damage -In order to maintain an erection, the nerves must work normally. The nerve can be damaged by diabetes, multiple sclerosis, prostate surgery or spinal cord injury.
At one time, these factors were thought to be the main cause of erectile dysfunction medicines. Doctors now know that physical factors cause erectile dysfunction in most men with problems. But embarrassment or “anxiety in performance” can make physical problems worse.
Medicines many medications cause problems with sexual function. This includes medications for high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, and prostate cancer.
Hormonal Problems – Abnormal levels of certain hormones can interfere with erection and libido. Hormonal problems, such as low testosterone levels, are a rare cause of erectile dysfunction.
Men with erectile dysfunction have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. This usually interferes with sexual activity.
Erectile dysfunction can occur suddenly or gradually. Some people slowly lose the firmness or duration of an erection.
In other men, especially men whose erectile dysfunction is primarily caused by psychological factors, problems can occur unexpectedly. You can improve at any time.
Men with erectile dysfunction can continue normal orgasm and ejaculation without a full erection.
Your doctor will ask about your medical history. He or she will want to learn what medical conditions can cause impotence. This may include vascular, nervous and hormonal disorders.
Vascular disorders affect the whole body. Many men with erectile dysfunction due to vascular disease also have a history of heart disease, stroke or coldness of the foot.
Neurological problems can contribute to erectile dysfunction in men with a history of diabetes and spinal cord injury. They can also cause symptoms in other parts of the body.
In men with abnormal hormone levels, decreased libido often involves impotence.
Your doctor will review your medications. This includes over-the-counter products and herbal remedies.
Your doctor will ask you about your sex life. He or she will ask about the quality of your sexual relationship.
Your doctor will examine you to find evidence of a medical problem. This includes an examination of the genitals and testes. A blood test allows you to check your blood sugar, cholesterol, and certain hormone levels.
Sometimes the doctor may order additional tests. One such test is the night penis test. This is how you determine how often you get an erection while you sleep.
Another test that can be done is the Doppler ultrasound of blood vessels in the penis. This test measures how well blood flows through your penis.
Your doctor may not be able to explain the specific reason for impotence. But regardless of the cause of the problem, many treatments are effective. Therefore, extensive testing may not be necessary.
