Tell us your name and a little about yourself.

My name is Gala Mirey. I came to Canada from Moscow, during the “Perestroika” time in Russia to try to find a better life. I am a wife, a mother and a grandmother, and a few years ago I gave birth to my passion business “GALA Fashion.” I love what I do, am a people person, and love to watch what people wear and how they present themselves to the world, which I think enables you to learn about their lives and their background.

What exactly does your company do?

We have a small boutique-studio in Toronto called “GALA Fashion.” We design handcrafted one of a kind jewelry and accessories and ship them all around the world. We design unique cuts and eye-catching combinations of leather, textiles, and hardware which are the hallmark features of our brand that give our pieces a modern edge. High-quality materials, top-level workmanship and attention to detail are what make our customer experience first class. We are able to personalize and enhance any pendant and take custom orders to design your dream piece. The idea of harmony is at the heart of our company’s brand philosophy….we strive for simplicity, elegance and to empower self-expression so you can dare to wear.

What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?

Arguably, the first major challenge in life came when I decided to find a better life for me and my 10-year-old daughter away from Russia. I couldn’t take my daughter with me in the beginning, as I had to make the right platform for her to start a new life. Moving away from home was a huge change in my life and posed several challenges. I had to learn how to live my life without my daughter for a while, I had to learn a new language, had to find a job, I had to be strong enough to provide for myself far away from my home and keep myself from ending up in any unwanted trouble whatsoever.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?

Be the person you admire, not the person your parents, teachers, preachers or politicians admire. To do this, develop your innate abilities by dissolving mental clutter, and confinement. That is the path to being whole, as you are, not as others wish you to be.

Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?

Me and my parents. Being an only child, It was lonely, depressing and sad…
No, I’m just kidding! It was awesome. I never wished for siblings, I was always content being on my own. My parents were my best friends. I could never understand what it’s like to have a relationship with a brother or a sister and to be able to confide in them. That being said, I’ve learned a lot from myself. Hence, I believe I’ve influenced myself a lot more than anyone else. My mother was a strict parent. As a child, we often misinterpret our parent’s strict behavior toward us. But I’m truly thankful to my mother for not letting me turn into a spoiled brat. Her presence was undermined yet crucial in my upbringing. She has been an inspiration for me both as a parent and a person. I can’t imagine my life without her. Her greatest lesson was of self-respect and confidence. My father was a cool parent since my mother played the strict parent. He’s always been wise and understanding. He was more of a best friend to me. He is an epitome of someone who’s both caring and strong. These are the 3 people who have influenced my life more than anyone else and they continue to do so.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?

Huge thanks to my husband. I thank him so much for all the little things he does to make my life easier. The fact that he always willing to share in everything is one of the many wonderful things about him that always makes me count myself as lucky and blessed for having him in my life.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

I should have probably had a ready-made answer for this question, but I don’t think I have ever kept a record of my successes in my thoughts. I tend to think about what I can do better, what I need to know, or how I accomplished the tasks I just completed.
