Movers and Shakers Interview with Ginger Thomas

Ginger Thomas

Tell us your name and a little about yourself.

Hi, I’m Ginger Thomas, I’ve been painting for just a little over 5 years. I’ve always had creative jobs in the past (from marketing to graphic design to home staging) which I feel has contributed to the success I’m having now.

My passion for art began at a young age, but it was not until September of 2014 that I began my career as a self-taught artist. I grew up in Summit, Mississippi and spent most of my adult life in Birmingham, AL. In 2011, I returned to Mississippi and began painting in 2014. I quickly realized there was obvious freedom and personal expression with abstraction and was deeply interested in the effects of color, texture and the emotional response to strong composition and design. By creating something that told a story without an observational subject matter was very exciting. My work is a mix of styles, ranging from modern to rustic and my goal is to have the elements of design, color, and texture unleash a sense of emotion for the viewer.

As an artist, I find the act of painting to be euphoric. I have a passion for color, texture, movement, and design that are conveyed in my paintings. My inspiration is pulled from my surroundings, experiences and imagination. I began by creating abstract shapes on the canvas with a texture medium, from there the painting evolves into compositions in which color and texture are the primary subjects. The image is not the focus, but rather a part of the process. My goal is to have the elements of design, color and texture unleash a sense of calming emotion for the viewer. My art is a piece of who I am, it is about the process of discovery, my personal feelings, the colors that inspire me, and it is created to soothe the soul.

What exactly does your company do?

I am an abstract artist that uses acrylic/mixed media. My artwork features a specialized texture technique that differentiates my work from other artists. I am also an art instructor and have taught students from all over the world.

What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?

Oh let’s see, my biggest challenge was learning social media and keeping up with the constant changes. Another challenge was having to use my kitchen as my studio (and I still do).

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?

There are no set rules, do what’s right for you and don’t let setbacks and failure keep you from pursuing your dream. Never let one person’s opinion dictate how you do YOUR art. Remember, it’s just their opinion and there are thousands of others that appreciate your work.

Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?

The Summit Trio: Halcyon Barnes, Ruth Atkinson, and Bess Dawson. These ladies are from my hometown of Summit, MS and became very well known all over the US for their unique style of art.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful to who helped get you to where you are?

My husband. He’s been totally supportive of my art, even when I quit a full-time job to paint. Then a few collectors believed in me enough to purchase my first pieces of artwork.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

My greatest success is to be where I am today regarding my artwork. I now have collectors from all over the world. In the beginning, I had no guidance whatsoever on the business side of it or any side of it for that matter. I pretty much had to figure out social media myself, and I was fortunate enough to grow pretty fast once that happened. Since I’ve grown, I’ve been contacted by two art supply/paint companies to become an influencer for them. One of these companies I work with has created a Ginger Thomas Signature Paint Series. I also have become an influencer for an Art app as well. Earlier this year I taught my first workshop in Miami and now have conducted about 20 others. I am currently in the process of creating my first online course which will be released in January of 2020.
