Tell us your name and a little about yourself.
My name is Lil Savvy also known as Kalen Hawkins. Also, my stage name is Lil Savvy. Lil Savvy Runs an entertainment company and marketing company. He helps businesses, artists, models, and entrepreneurs, with marketing their brand and social media. He also makes music, he is the next big hiphop gospel artist to blow, he beat cancer in 2017 and has started making music ever since. I also have my own website called lilsavvy.com He was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and defeated it in 2018 with the support of his family, his doctors, and the nurses at Northside Hospital in Sandy Springs Georgia. Shortly after, he started back doing the things he loved like playing basketball, going to events, and working at the family business in Stone Mountain. Lil Savvy went to over 7 schools in Atlanta, Georgia. He later graduated in December of 2019 from Georgia State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. Lil Savvy is a well-educated rapper as well as an honorable man. He has overcome many obstacles in his life and feels as though God has a plan for him to continue to tell his story on all platforms.
What exactly does your company do?
My company helps get the artist names out there and also helps people’s businesses get more traffic. I specialize and marketing and also I am starting my own label that will sign independent artists and models. My company can help brand artist and entrepreneurs to be the best they can be. I want people to get there money worth when doing business with me. Also, my company is fairly new, I don’t really have it off the ground yet, but I want to be able to have a relationship with all the biggest publications in the world, and soon as I need them I want to be able to call them and work. You can also look at Lil savvy entertainment as a PR firm. We will get people interconnection they need without the headache of them trying to do everything on there own. We will get artist gigs on shows and get their music in movies. We will get entrepreneurs sales up with my marketing tools through social media.
What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge I had to face was being diagnosed with cancer. It was like I was dying but still living. I had to push through tough times. I was weak, skinny from all the drugs they were giving me it was a tough decision but I got through it. Another challenge I had to face was going back to school. After being diagnosed with cancer it was hard to focus. Your concentration level is a little off. So it was harder to get my degree, but I still got it. Also, it was a big challenge to get back to gaining my weight back from all the chemotherapy. Some things I did to overcome this was, workout, lift more weights, do less cardio, eat foods that were high in protein and also they put me on a pill called steroids when I took that I gained weight faster, and no know not the steroids that give you Muscle a different type of steroid.
What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?
I wish someone would have given me the advice to invest in myself earlier on in my life. But as of now, I’m actually doing pretty well in life. Another thing I wish someone would have told me was that eating bad foods could cause you to get sick faster. I thought that just because you worked out a lot you don’t have to eat healthy like vegetables and fruit but I found out the hard way. I don’t know if that was the case of me getting cancer but I do know that this is not good. Even athletes have to eat healthy. An artist should eat healthy as well because they are on the road staying up late killing there immune system. Drinking and smoking kill the immune system as well and I hope this didn’t play a factor in me getting cancer. I know that covid 19 is a virus and the doctors said that doing things that decrease the immune system will give you a higher chance of catching the coronavirus and let’s be real nobody wants that!
Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?
My biggest influencer is my dad. He owns a huge business, a huge church, and is well known. I would have to say he is a very successful person to lookup to and admire, and the best thing about it is he’s my dad. My dad’s name is Bishop Gary Hawkins. He pastors a church in Stone Mountain Georgia. He has helped the community in so many ways. He gives back. And also when people need a thing he gets it done. He is not selfish at all and I’m glad to be his son. I have four other brothers as well. But my dad is very influential in my life. It’s hard to compete with the things that he has accomplished. He preaches three times a Sunday and twice on Wednesday. Very hard working man that’s opened up Daycare and a shopping plaza with barbershops.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?
I don’t have a particular person but I would like to recognize my mom and dad, for helping me get through college. I graduated in December 2019 from Georgia state university, and without the help of my parents, I don’t think I would have finished. They pushed me to stay focus after I beat cancer I started not to go back and finish but they pushed me and I thank them for that. Their success made me want to grind hard and be successful. I’m grateful for both of them for helping me through tough times in the hospital when I was battling cancer. If I had anyone to call and cry to it would be them. They are my heroes, and my aunt and uncles and brother and sister help me to and my stepmom and cousins all helped me get through that tough time in the hospital when we didn’t know if I would make it.
What do you see as your greatest success in life?
My greatest success story would be me beating cancer after the doctor told me I had stage 4 cancer, I fought through and asked God to heal my body, now it’s two years later and I feel better than ever. This success story will be forever because one day I was hanging with my girlfriend and my body did not feel right. I told her if I didn’t feel better in the next day I’m going to the hospital and little did you know I did not feel better. We went to the hospitals and I found out I had cancer. This moment was life-changing. They started putting me on IV and all type of pain killers. This was a scary moment for me and my family. My dad cried I cried. But God got us through it. We prayed the church prayed and I made it through the storm. Now I’m here telling my story to the people.
