Tell us your name and a little about yourself.
My name is Karen Elmir, I’m Founder and CEO of The Elmir Group – a top producing team under Cervera Real Estate. I’ve known since I was 12 years old that I wanted to work in real estate. I’m naturally a people person, I love numbers and business, so I have always felt like real estate was the exact right fit for me. I got my license right when I turned 18. Shortly after, I founded The Elmir Group – a luxury real estate brokerage that operates under Cervera Real Estate. I joined the Top Producer Club at Cervera Real Estate in 2014, and have remained a top producer every quarter since then. As CEO of The Elmir Group, I have led the team’s sales of more than $350 million of real estate within the Brickell, Biscayne Bay, Key Biscayne, Design District, Midtown, Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables areas in the past year alone.
What exactly does your company do?
My company specializes in the sale of luxury real estate. My team and I put a strong focus on truly knowing the neighborhoods we work in. We’ve become hyper-local specialists of sorts. We make sure that we have a strong understanding of the ins and outs of the listing, the area and the buyer who I am showing a listing to. Prospective buyers want to work with someone who they trust to make sure they are making the best decision possible. We familiarize ourselves with every aspect of an area, including the neighborhood, the housing market of the area, the inventory, the schools, local issues, and traffic concerns. Being knowledgeable about these aspects helps me to guide the potential buyer in making an informed decision. This method has proven extremely successful for us and has helped us to stand out in the industry.
What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
We are growing fast in terms of clients and listings, which means we have to grow our team as well. When selecting candidates to join our team, we strategically seek out individuals with a specific set of talents and skills that are in line with what we represent. We pride ourselves in providing excellent customer service, and it can sometimes be hard to find viable candidates. We overcome this obstacle by staying involved, dedicating time to the business and continuing to bring on new talent as we see fit.
What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?
Create a strong work/life balance so you don’t burn out. In order to perform my best each day, I have to make sure I am as healthy, mentally and physically, as possible. I am a firm believer in the old ‘early to be, early to rise’ adage. You will find me in bed by 10:30 p.m. every night. This allows me to wake up, run three miles and be up and working by 7 a.m. Even though I am always on call, I find time for myself to recharge and recuperate through exercise and meditation.
Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?
To be completely honest, it would probably be DJ Khaled. I love his positive energy and how motivational he is. He has a beautiful family, and I always say that if I had children – I would love for them to be similar to the characteristics of Assad Khaled because he is probably the youngest baby boss. I have never seen such a happier baby, and I wish DJ Khaled and his family the best!
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?
The Elmir Group operates under Cervera Real Estate, a family-owned company built around three generations of Cervera women, one of them: Veronica Cervera Goeseke. Veronica has been the perfect mentor for me. She began her career in real estate in 1980 and has worked in every aspect of the business. Nearly 50 years in business, Cervera has been credited with the creation and revitalization of new neighborhoods in Miami, they were the driving force behind everything I grew up admiring. Having Veronica to guide me so early in my career has been valuable to me as a professional and a person. The company’s vision of personalized customer service really resonates with me as it is one of my strengths. The wealth of knowledge she has passed on to me is something I hope to pass on to future realtors.
What do you see as your greatest success in life?
My greatest success in life so far has been seeing my hard work pay off. This has fueled my drive to continue to work hard to build and strengthen my company.
