Movers & Shakers Interview with Nicola Mar

Tell us your name and a little about yourself.
Nicola Mar. I am an author and I just published my 5th book, Roses by Moonlight.
What exactly does your company do?
Inspire and empower young women & encourage love and kindness.
What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
When I started writing, I had a hard time believing in my work. I was very critical of my writing and it was hard to put something out there that I thought could be better. However, I learned that nothing is ever perfect, and if you don’t take a risk, you’ll never get anywhere. Talking to other writers and finding a group of loyal readers really helped me overcome my fear of rejection.
What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?
I wish someone had told me that everyone will have an opinion about my work (good and bad), but I must follow what makes me feel good and what makes me smile. There’s a place for everyone in this world; life is not a competition.
Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?
Oprah! Because….Oprah. I also admire my friend and fellow author Katrina McGhee who has been a champion for women for decades. Her book, Loving on Me!, inspired me to always believe in myself and my unique talents.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?
In college, the English department had a visiting author and professor named Connie May Fowler. Her creative writing class cemented my decision to become a writer. Before that class, I had been writing for years, but always thought of writing as a hobby. Once I finished that class, I believed I could actually write for a living. She inspired and empowered me to become what I am today — a real writer and poet! 🙂
What do you see as your greatest success in life?
Hearing from people that they read and loved my books and poems and telling me how much my words helped get them through hard times.
