Employees are an essential part of every business. Without them, not a single big company would be able to operate. However, employees often don’t know just how important their role is and that’s why they ignore the rights they have in the workplace. But what exactly are the rights you, as an employee, have? Here are some of them you simply have to know about.
The right to work reasonable hours
If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably heard the term workaholic being tossed around all the time. The term is used to refer to people who spend a lot of time working, and it seems like there are more and more people who belong to this group.
Although many employees feel like working more than they’re supposed to be the only way to keep their job, there are laws that have been specifically designed to help them retain a healthy work-life balance. In case you feel like you’re spending too much time at work, chances are you’re working more than you have to and it’s time to do something about it. You might even get a better paycheck for the extra hours you voluntarily spend in the office.
The right to report a problem
Another thing a large number of employees don’t seem to be familiar with is the fact that they have the right to report a problem they detect. This includes everything from the way someone is being treated in the office to potential issues regarding the company’s operations. Staff members often identify these problems, but they feel like their role doesn’t allow them to report problems or make any kind of suggestions. But what if we tell you that you have the right to do this? Laws and regulations have been designed in such a manner as to create a safer and more secure workplace, and it’s up to you to report them and help bring change in the company you work for.
The right to stay healthy
How many times have you seen people show up for work even though they’re sick? It’s just that they often feel like they’re putting their job at risk if they don’t. Bear in mind that this shouldn’t be the case and if you’re out of sick days and you’re dealing with a big health issue, you shouldn’t be made to show up at work.
Also, in case you cannot keep working due to a disability, it doesn’t mean you’ll stop receiving money. If you turn to superannuation lawyers, you’ll be able to claim your superannuation insurance benefits and receive either a lump sum of money or regular monthly payments.
The right to stay safe
Workplace safety is the subject of a lot of discussions every year. The good news is, laws and regulations have changed a lot during the last few decades and employers are much more responsible for providing their employees with a safe working environment. Therefore, if you feel like there are potential health hazards in your workplace, it’s your right to report it to your employer and ask them to deal with it. If they don’t, there are experts who can evaluate the problem and push your employer to do it. If they don’t, it can even cost them the entire business.
The right to be treated equally
We’ve all heard stories about people who’ve been discriminated against at work. It’s important to keep in mind that this is something that not a single employee out there should go through and it’s their right to stand up for themselves. If you believe you’re not being treated the same way your colleagues are for whatever reason, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do something about it. Business owners who are found guilty of it are usually made to start in-house training programs and alter their current policies. Most importantly, they get to learn that not treating everyone equally can have huge consequences for their company and hurt their own finances.
It’s common for employees to ignore their rights and focus more on pleasing their employer. Have these five things in mind and make sure you don’t let anything endanger your health, finances, and personal life.
