5 Most Famous Reggaeton Singers from Puerto Rico

Published

on

Puerto Rico is a country known for its wonderful beaches and as a leading rum producer worldwide. However, there is one more thing that is extremely important and also defines this country: music.

The various music genres that are part of Puerto Rico’s culture and musical history include salsa, plena, bomba, and even pop ballads. Still, there is one more music genre that has become highly popular in recent years called reggaeton. Even though some view this music as one without any significant purpose and of low quality, it’s undeniable that it’s trendy in recent years.

Therefore, we will see the five most famous reggaeton singers from Puerto Rico who managed to conquer the music industry worldwide.

Let’s start.

Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny is undoubtedly one of the younger Puerto Rican reggaeton performers, but he is already leading the way in the music business regarding the music genre.

He is also a trap music singer and was discovered and signed to a record label by becoming famous on SoundCloud. In fact, Bad Bunny was working in a supermarket as a bagger while studying at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. All of a sudden, SoundCloud changed his life forever and made Bad Bunny tickets one of the most demanded tickets by fans that sell out in a matter of seconds.

Still, before he began selling Bad Bunny stadium tour tickets, he began to become popular with his breakthrough single “Diles” in 2016. Once he became known, Bunny made various hit songs and exciting TV and stage appearances. Moreover, he has made various collaborations with Drake, J Balvin, and many more.

Since his debut album “X 100pre,” Bad Bunny concert tickets have been on the rise as he has peaked at the top of the most prestigious music charts worldwide.

Nicky Jam

Nicky Jam is yet another famous reggaeton performer, who was actually born in Massachusetts, but to a Puerto Rican father and a Dominican mother. However, his family moved to the Island of Enchantment when Nicky was 10 years of age.

Jam recorded his first EP when he was only 14 years old, which was named “…Distinto a los demas.” This happened at a perfect time since it was 1995, so he caught Daddy Yankee’s attention pretty fast. Luckily for him, they formed a group by the name of Los Cangris. They were active together since the late 90s, but they split in 2004, which led to Nicky Jam’s career declining, and he had some legal issues and substance abuse.

However, one of the best things is that he got back on track as a solo performer. Today, Nicky Jam is one of the most famous reggaeton singers around the globe who now has even more romantic lyrics in his tracks.

Daddy Yankee

Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez, yes, you read that right, that’s the real name of the worldwide famous Daddy Yankee. Believe it or not, Yankee is also from Puerto Rico, and he is not only a singer and a rapper but also an actor and a songwriter.

In fact, if music was a sport, he would have been in the number one spot regarding reggaeton music since he is labeled the King of Reggaeton, both by music critics and his many fans. Actually, Yankee first coined the word “reggaeton” in 1994 when he described this then-new music genre. In essence, reggaeton is a mix of Spanish singing and rapping, American rap, Hispanic Caribbean music, and Jamaican reggae rhythms, if all this makes sense at all.

Be as it may, none of the new reggaeton performers would have become famous if Daddy Yankee didn’t open the door for them; more interestingly, some of them weren’t even born when he was already popular.

That’s why he is praised as the number-one influence by many new Latin musicians.

Myke Towers

Michael Anthony Torres Monge, known by his stage name Myke Towers, began his exciting career in 2013. Towers is also a songwriter who likes to mix different musical styles and genres with reggaeton, such as Latin trap and hip-hop.

A fun fact is that Myke collaborated with Bad Bunny back in 2019 on a song they made together by the name of “Estamos Arriba.” His first glance at fame came after his famous mixtape “El Final de Principio” in 2016, which peaked at number twelve on the Latin Rhythm Albums chart by Billboard magazine.

He may not be on the same stardom level as the other reggaeton singers on this list. Still, Myke Towers is continuously improving as a musician and getting more popular among music lovers worldwide. Winning “New Artist of the Year” at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2021 is proof enough of his rising popularity.

Ozuna

The fifth and final most famous reggaeton singer from Puerto Rico is Ozuna. He is a singer that has all five of his albums at the top of the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart at a certain point, while his 2018 album, Aura, was number seven on Billboard 200.

Ozuna’s style is mainly reggaeton and trap, but he has had collaborations with musicians of various genres, such as bachata, moombahton, and reggae. He made a decision to become a singer at the age of 12, of course, influenced by Latin music genres such as reggaeton, bachata, and salsa.

His debut was back in 2012 with the track “Imaginando,” which led to collaborations with Anuel AA and Daddy Yankee while it also caught the attention of record labels. After releasing several singles, Ozuna signed with Sony Music Latin in 2017.

The rest is history, as they say since Ozuna has become one of the most famous reggaeton and trap performers ever, which means he certainly deserves a place on this top-five list, even if it wasn’t only for Puerto Rican singers.

So, if you really like reggaeton music, now is the perfect time to buy concert tickets since they sell out extremely fast for these singers!
