Take a look at any of your favorite interior design magazines and you’ll notice that every room has very noticeable focal points. There’s something about these elements that helps them turn a disjointed mess of a room into an interior design wonder. If high-quality designs feature them at every step, they are probably something worth incorporating into your own rooms. Although, how do you define an important focal point? More importantly, what is a focal point, exactly?
1. What is the focal point?
If you aren’t familiar with focal points, you can think of them as a kind of a centre of activity in a room. It’s something that focuses your attention and draws you in. Whenever you walk into a room, you can notice it right off the bat.
Focal points help anchor a room and give it some personality and a natural flow. You can’t just randomly throw in a bunch of furniture into a room and hope that it turns out just fine, there’s a certain level of skill that goes into the design.
2. How do you make a focal point?
Keep in mind, just about anything can become the focal point of a room, as long as it’s well-placed and accented within the décor. Making a focal point requires vision, you have to have an idea for your room and the ability to make it into reality.
Start with the bare bones of the room. The walls, windows, and ceiling all have a certain flow that will interact with the décor you place within the room’s interior. Once you’ve figured that out, you need to imagine how certain elements would fit into the imaginary canvas that is your room.
3. Artistic expression
Pieces of art have a knack for drawing attention to themselves. When something is strikingly beautiful or easily recognizable, your eyes will quickly focus on it, whether you know it or not. This aspect of art can be used to turn it into an attractive focal point of a room.
Pick an appropriate spot on your wall to put a striking piece of art and go from there. Make sure it’s something with flair and personality so that it will draw attention from afar. It doesn’t even have to be a solitary art piece, you can turn part of your wall into a small gallery, showcasing various complementary pieces. Best of all, by turning it into a focal point, you’re also making it a lot easier to appreciate the art itself.
4. Furniture and size
The easiest way to draw attention to something is to make it bigger. A big piece of art, a big bed, or a huge lamp will never go unnoticed in a room. Consider any bedroom design that you’ve seen thus far. The bed is nearly always the focal point, no matter what the rest of the room looks like. Because of this, it’s important to use size to your advantage when designing a room.
For living rooms, couches are a great choice for a focal point. A bunch of colorful pillows located on a grand and comfortable-looking couch will always draw attention. Guests will be naturally drawn to sit on the couch even if it’s their first time in the room itself.
If you want to aim the focus on the opposite side of the room, an entertainment center is a big piece of furniture that can never go unnoticed. It’s designed to be the focal point of a room and to draw attention to the entertainment. Sitting on the couch simply becomes a convenience to point your gaze towards the entertainment center. The result is the same, but the focal point has changed.
5. Gorgeous views galore
A grandiose view will always draw attention to itself. When you’re lucky enough to have a home with a gorgeous view, you have to make good use of it. A large window, properly positioned, will give your room a focal point that is unparalleled.
You shouldn’t have anything blocking your focal views, but very large windows are considered an exception to this rule. After all, we all need our privacy from time to time and room décor doesn’t change this.
However, this doesn’t mean that the view won’t be available. Some translucent blinds could give you privacy while not completely obscuring the beautiful view. Consult experts like Marlow & Finch for advice for blinds and their installation before putting the finishing touches on your gorgeous new focal point. If the sun is still able to shine through, unobstructed, you’re getting the best of both worlds.
The home and its many elements are perfectly viable candidates for focal points. An exposed brick wall might not seem like it’s a particularly gorgeous view at first, but the real art is in how you make it part of your vision. Built-in shelving can be just as noticeable as long as you adorn it with some great accessories.
Windows aren’t always doorways into the view behind them. Sometimes, the view is dull and featureless, while the window is the real gem. When you add some attractive and colorful curtains, you can completely forget about the view and focus your attention on a window that is worth looking at.
If you have a fireplace in your home, it’s hard not to turn it into a focal point. You’ve probably seen hundreds of room designs with a fireplace that takes all the focus for itself. This is because it’s also a practical element which makes the room feel quaint and cozy. Turning furniture towards it is only natural because you want the heat to face you and keep you warm in an efficient way.
A focal point is a crucial tool that turns your room into an artistic expression. When you know what can become a focal point, it becomes a lot easier to decide where to focus your attention. Whether you pick a single focal point for your room or several, you can be sure that it’s going to make space look like a masterpiece of design.
