Original Gift Ideas for Picky People

Original Gift Ideas for Picky People

We all have at least one person in our life who is extremely hard to shop for. When it comes to getting them gifts for holidays and birthdays, we are always racking our brains to come up with something they would like. You don’t want them to think you didn’t put any thought into the present by getting them something super generic but you also don’t want to waste money on an item they might hate. However, there are some gifts that appeal to everyone. So, if you too are looking for the perfect present for a picky person, here are some original ideas.

Go for something you know they like

When someone is picky, experimenting with new things is always a gamble. That is why you can just stick to what you know they like. Listen to what they’re saying they need and see whether you can help them with a collection they might have.

For instance, maybe they talked to you about how much they like a certain dress or watch. Maybe their favorite piece of clothing got ripped. These are all great opportunities to get them something you are sure they need and would use. If you’re close with this person, you’re probably aware of their style and can guess which items appeal to them the most. Some people like having only black clothes, so then your only challenge is finding the right cut and fit. If your loved one is into graphic shirts with funny slogans, you can easily find a piece that will appeal to them.

Furthermore, if you know their literary taste, you can get them a book from their favorite author – bonus points if you find the first edition. On the other hand, consider something a bit different. You can choose a self-help book if you think they could benefit from it or a how-to publication to make fun of their black thumb or the inability to cook.

There are so many other options in this category. In case they’re obsessed with candles, go for a few unique smells you know they like. If they like booze, get them their favorite alcoholic beverages or look for a bottle of vintage wine. Maybe they like art – get them something by their favorite artist or get a local artist to make something super unique.

Invest in a useful device

Have you considered getting them an appliance or a device that could make their life easier? This is a great solution as it’s hard to be picky about these things seeing as how they can improve someone’s life.

More and more people are implementing technology in their home, so you can help by getting them a smart speaker that comes with a virtual assistant. Who wouldn’t like the chance to play their favorite song on blast just by asking for it? Furthermore, if they already have this installed, see whether they need some new gadgets to take their home to a whole new level.

On the other hand, if they’re afraid of technology taking over, you can find other smaller useful appliances. For instance, if they love waffles, you can get them a mini waffle maker and they can have them for breakfast every day. A hand blender is a great option for everyone obsessed with smoothies and a healthy lifestyle. For a real cooking aficionado, a magical defrosting tray can be super useful for food prep.

In case they’re always on the go, get them a portable phone charger, a quality pair of headphones or a handy thermos.

Get them something personalized

Even if this person is picky, they will definitely love it if you give this gift some personality.

For example, do you have any inside jokes? You can get them printed on a mug. Do you have special nicknames for each other? Get custom t-shirts in Australia and proudly show off your bond while walking down the street.

If you’re crafty, you can get your DIY on. Paint their favorite quote on canvas and surprise them with it. You can also do some embroidery if that’s your preferred way of expressing yourself. Your options here are limitless, just let your imagination run wild.

Provide them with relaxation

In this day and age, who doesn’t feel stressed out most of the time? That is why finding a way to help your friend relax might be the perfect gift. No matter how picky they are, they are sure to love this.

Start by considering something smaller, such as a neck or foot massager. They can come in very handy after a long day at work. Even better – a massage chair that will completely recharge their batteries. A DIY nail kit might also be something they would enjoy or some hairstyling tools and products.

On the other hand, you can book them a spa day or weekend. Imagine all the professional massages, mud baths and pampering they’ll get to enjoy. Furthermore, make them an appointment at a beauty salon where they can get mani-pedis and get a gorgeous blowout or a new cut and color.

Assist them with their traveling adventures

If their preferred way of relaxation is traveling, you can help them out here as well. If you want the gift to be a big surprise, subtly try to figure out where they would like to travel next.

If your budget is a bit smaller and you can only afford a weekend getaway, visit a traveling agency and try to work out a plan that’s going to work for everyone. On the other hand, if more of you are pitching in to make your friend’s dream come true, you can consider some more exotic and faraway destinations. For instance, do they always talk about going to Iceland or Japan? Do they fantasize about spending a week on a beach in Bora Bora or the Bahamas? See whether this is something you can squeeze into your budget and surprise your loved one.

Alternatively, if you can’t afford to pay for their trip, you can at least make it more comfortable. Look for some traveling gadgets they can use. For instance, mini steam iron or a pocket-sized washing machine can be super useful on long trips. If they don’t have a travel pillow, that is definitely a good option and you can even consider an ostrich pillow. In case your friend enjoys recording their trips, you can invest in a good camera or even a drone, and don’t forget rechargeable batteries.

Help them learn more about their ancestry

Is this special person in your life interested in their family history? Well, then you can help them out by getting them an ancestry kit. They just need to get a saliva sample and send it to be analyzed. Eight weeks later, they will be able to learn more about their roots by seeing where their ancestors came from. Maybe they’re part Jewish, Asian or African and they didn’t even know. This will also allow them to find some distant living relatives. Such an interesting gift is sure to be appreciated.

Think about their pets

One thing you can also consider is getting something for their pets. An interesting toy, a dog house, a scratching post for cats – your options here really abound. On the other hand, if you know they always wanted a pet, visit some animal shelters and see whether any of those cuties can change your friend’s life forever. However, make sure this is something they want, have time for and are not allergic.

Donate to a charity of their choice

If, in addition to being hard to shop for, your loved one is also not a big fan of material gifts, you can choose to donate to a charity they support.

For instance, consider donating to the Australian Koala Foundation. You can make a one-time donation in your friend’s name or you can even adopt a koala, which is a bit pricier option. If they care about natural diversity, check out the Nature Conservancy. To help save the planet, donate to the Environmental Defense Fund or Greenpeace that tackle issues such as clean energy and plastic pollution among other ecological problems. To help save young LGBTQ lives, support the Trevor Project. You can also consider some poverty charities such as the Against Malaria Foundation or Helen Keller International. The Clean Water Fund and the World Bank provide people with clean water, so think about donating to them as well.

With just a little bit of research, you are sure to find a good cause you can donate to and make the world a better place and your friend happy at the same time.

It doesn’t matter if you choose to give them a useful gadget, something funny or make the world a better place in their name, your loved one will be delighted that you remembered the date and made an effort. The most important thing is that you are there for each other and spend quality time together.
