Under the Affordable Care Act, institutions have a higher incentive for earning positive outcomes. Not only are their reputations on the line but their bottom lines are affected by poor outcomes. Poor outcomes from things like hospital-borne infections are often completely avoidable with the proper operative and post-operative sterilization products. Preventing infection is a large factor in patient care and avoiding poor outcomes. Sterilization wraps prove to be an effective and inexpensive route for the medical professional.
In prior years, there were significantly less surgeries taking place than there are now. With an aging population that often calls for more procedures than previously before, medical procedures performed across the US have risen. Add to the fact that affordable health care is more available, more people are spending more time in hospitals than ever before. However, with more patients comes more risk for hospital-borne infections.
The use of sterilization wraps is used to avoid infection but trends suggest that the market for different products will open up greatly. Originally, double layered muslin was used to keep trays of surgical instruments free of bacteria. The muslin was soft and reusable but did not provide the proper amount of bacterial protection. In the 1960’s, with the introduction of the non-woven material polypropylene, doctors found suitable bacterial protection but the polypropylene was too brittle to withstand outside elements and had to be double wrapped. The product used mostly by medical professionals is the spunbond-meltblown-spunbond (SMS) layered material. The spunbond layers provide flexibility which polypropylene lacked and the meltblown layer provides the sterility which muslin lacked.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently changed their requirements for institutions when it comes to the sterility maintenance of surgical instruments. Maintenance of package integrity (MPI) testing must be performed to ascertain whether or not a surgical tray is still sterile after a certain amount of time. While double wrapping trays helps keep trays sterile, it is not a foolproof method, especially given certain environmental aspects where the tray is stored.
The market for nonwoven material for sterilization wraps is projected to reach tens of billions due to the high demand for better sterilization options. However, fierce competition currently over saturates the industry, with multiple companies vying for the most protective material against bacteria. Hospitals are the biggest proprietors of new sterilization products but clinics and private practices are gaining headway in the markets as well.
The biggest points of improvement for the design of these wraps are the sterility of the material, how many times a surgical instrument tray needs to be wrapped in the material, and materials that do not cause skin sensitivity. The increase in the use of wraps and a global wide consciousness of sterility and the dangers of bacteria, mean these issues will be dealt with soon.
