Real estate investor Mike Ogbebor has spent the last few years building his empire and sharing advice and words of wisdom about financial freedom with his followers. The CEO of Newline Investors, a venture capitalist company, came from humble beginnings and has managed to experience success thanks to his faith in God, his strong family foundation, and his never-give-up attitude.
“As a millennial, it is important for me to share the knowledge I have learned to help other millennials achieve success outside of a 9-5 job,” says Mike.
Mike grew up on welfare in Houston. He shared a one-bedroom apartment with five other family members. Although he knew he had to work hard to get out of the welfare cycle, it wasn’t always easy. He’s always been driven and intelligent, but doubts were sowed in his mind when people made fun of his accent.
“I knew I was a smart guy and I couldn’t always express verbally what I wanted,” he says. “I remember talking at times and people making fun of my accent.”
Instead of allowing this doubt to hold him back, Mike used it as fuel to push him to work harder and adapt. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of Houston and then went on to study medicine at Ross Medical School. Although he was on his way to financial prosperity, he realized that medical school wasn’t for him. He took a risk, dropped out, and started investing in different businesses — real estate, in particular.
One of his mentors once said that everything loses value at some point, except real estate. Mike took his advice and poured his heart and soul into his real estate business. He’s learned many lessons along the way and his goal as a wealth coach is to help others learn these lessons without having to face the same mistakes that he made.
He founded Newline Investors to help people seek out investment properties and provide a consultant service for those who don’t know where to start. As he continued to grow his company, he realized that there was a worrying lack of understanding amongst young people who were looking to explore the business world.
Schools are focused on a one size fits all approach to education, which centers more on providing students with the tools to head into a 9-5 workforce rather than starting their own businesses. As a budding entrepreneur, not only do you need to know how to register your company, create a company bank account, pay for taxes, and register your employees, you also need to develop a knack for knowing when and where to invest. You need to consider advertising, marketing, product development, and keeping things fresh and creative. It’s a daunting task for someone who’s just starting out.
Armed with the knowledge and experience he’s picked up from his mentors and his years in the business, Mike expanded Newline Investors to include industries that are predicting significant growth within the next few years. He’s currently working on projects in the medical industry – specifically, investments in dialysis treatments – and he’s investing in IT leasing and finance. These kinds of industry investments don’t just open up financial opportunities, it also creates a space for independent research and innovation.
While this isn’t inside knowledge, it also isn’t something you could pick up from your AP Math class. Mike’s goal is to provide a starting point for people who are in the same position he was in. For someone who’s interested in getting into investments in a variety of industries, a good starting point would be Mike’s Instagram account. It’s filled with motivational and inspirational posts, giving his followers a look into his everyday mindset. It’s also got an important dose of informative, valuable business-related content. One of his recent posts includes some tips on adopting a contrarian mindset when investing. It’s a market timing strategy that looks at purchasing and selling when the rest of the crowd seems to be swimming the other way.
