Biography of Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey born Orpah Gail Winfrey January 29, 1954 is an American media entrepreneur, talk show host, actress, producer and screenwriter. Winfrey has several award winners to her name. The show aired from 1986 to 2011 and became the highest rated soap opera in history. She has the distinction of being America’s richest African American writer of the 20th century and at one point the only black woman in the world. Winfrey was born in a poor village in Mississippi to a single mother and grew up in Milwaukee. She faced many troubles in her childhood, according to which she was raped at the age of nine and became pregnant at the age of fourteen; her son died in the womb. She was left to live in Tennessee with a barber whom she calls her father. While there, she began working on a radio station as well as co-hosting a domestic news show at the age of 19 while still in high school. Winfrey was born to a single mother in a poor village in Mississippi. His mother Vernita Lee (born 1935) is a homemaker. Winfrey’s biological father is believed to be Vernon Winfrey (born 1933), a coal miner who later served in the armed forces at the time of Winfrey’s birth. However, it was Noah Robinson (born C.1925), a Mississippi farmer and World War II veteran, who discovered his biological father. A genetic test was done in 2006 to ascertain his nationality. In which it was found that Winfrey is 89% Sub-Saharan African, 8% Native American and 3% East American.

After Winfrey’s birth, her mother traveled north, and at the age of 6, Winfrey moved with her mother, Vernita Lee, to live in Wisconsin, a village neighboring Milwaukee. Where he needed someone’s help, there was not even his grandmother to help him, that’s why he had to work for long hours. She started working as a servant. At the same time, Lee gave birth to another daughter, Winfrey’s younger sister, who was later named Patricia.

She won a “Miss Fire Prevention” contest on a local Nashville radio station, which earned her a chance to read the afternoon news.

Television

Working in local media, she was the youngest news anchor and the first black female news anchor at WLAC-TV in Nashville. He moved to Baltimore’s WJZ-TV in 1976 and was co-anchor of the six o’clock news. In 1977, he was dropped as co-anchor and worked in lower profile positions at the station. He was then recruited to join Richard Sher as co-host of WZ’s local talk show People Get Talking, which premiered on June 14, 1978. He hosted the local version of Dialing for Dollars there.

In 1983, Winfrey relocated to Chicago to host WLS-TV’s low-rated half-hour morning talk show, AM Chicago. The first episode aired on 2 January 1984. A few months after Winfrey took office, the show dropped to last place in the ratings and overtook Donahue as the highest-rated talk show in Chicago. Film critic Roger Ebert prompted her to sign a syndication deal with King World that Ebert predicted would generate 40 times as much revenue as his television show, At the Movies. It was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show Extended, extended to a full hour, and aired nationally on September 8, 1986. Winfrey’s syndicated show brought in a double Donahue’s national audience, displacing Donahue as the number-one daytime talk show in the US. His much publicized competition was the subject of heavy scrutiny.
