Meet Kevin Zhang - The $30 Million eCommerce Mogul

Kevin Zhang is not your typical Vanderbilt University graduate. Most alumni of the prestigious university leverage their talent and diploma to land the highest paying job offered. But Kevin chose a different path – instead of following the crowd, he chose to branch out on his own. Although some (including his parents) saw this as risky, Kevin proved all naysayers wrong by pulling in $30 million in sales his first year in business with his eCommerce clothing brands.

“It’s hard to assure people who care about you that you’re on the right track when all they see is mounting bills and no stable income,” Kevin said. “So keeping the vision alive during start-up is crucial. My business partner Raoul was always there when things looked bleak.”  This is why Kevin tells everyone that a good partnership is crucial. “I’ll never forget the moment when Raoul and I stared eagerly at our phones waiting for the sale that would push us over the $1 million thresholds.” It’s a day he will never forget made all the more meaningful by having someone with which to share it.

Celebrating the successes is, of course, the best part of a partnership, but the long days, evenings and weekends together are part of the reality as well.  “During our first few months in business, Raoul and I would spend our Friday and Saturday nights processing returns and exchanges for our customers.” The two turned down a lot of invitations during that time – while their friends were going out, they were putting all their energy into the company. “There hasn’t been a weekend where I haven’t worked at least a few hours.”

Kevin acknowledges that entrepreneurs never get to leave work – he admits that each night he goes to sleep with ideas, thoughts, and worries racing through his mind. “When there’s a crisis, I have no life outside of work,” he said. “This might mean vacations get canceled at the last minute or not seeing sunlight when there’s a lot of work to do!”
Some might call this obsession, but it’s this devotion that has allowed Kevin to sell his products to more than 125,000 customers across 20 countries in his first six months in business. “We are on track to finish our first year with $20 million in sales.” Kevin credits much of the company’s success to more than 50 talented and dedicated employees. “They are truly responsible for the success we’ve enjoyed so far.”

Now when Kevin gets text messages from his mom, the tone is decidedly different from those, in the beginning, asking about his credit card balances. Both of his parents are so proud of his success. “When we hit  the $1 million mark, I surprised them with a visit home and took them out for a celebratory dinner.” It’s likely that there will be many such dinners in the future as Kevin continues to grow his enterprise and reach for the stars.
