How to Stay Focused at Home When Building Your Side Hustle

How to Stay Focused at Home When Building Your Side Hustle

Over 44 million people in the United States have a side-hustle, and that number is only expected to grow as time goes on. As the ‘gig economy’ becomes more popular and technology continues to create more opportunities to work remotely, finding ways to make money on the side will become easier and easier.

A side hustle can mean serious growth for your bank account. However, doing so while working a full-time job can take a serious toll on your confidence, especially if you’re struggling to focus at home. As you work towards growing your side hustle, it’s essential to be as productive as possible during your “work-from-home” hours so that you can see results and keep a balanced personal life. Here are a few ways you can stay focused at home when working on the side.

1. Create a Schedule and Follow It

Time management should be at the top of the priority list for those starting and building their side hustle. Learning how to create a schedule is essential in order to see success in all areas of your life. You’ll want to make sure that you’re still doing good work in your full-time job, especially if your side business fails to bring you a substantial income.

Create long-term and short-term goals, and work on mapping out specific actions needed in order to see those goals come to life. Focus on coming up with a clear plan for your day-to-day schedule that allows for both work and plays. Doing so will keep you from overworking and help you avoid burnout. Set goals, make an action plan, and be realistic about your abilities. A concise schedule that aligns with your goals will allow you to maximize your time at work.

2. Create a dedicated workspace

Many people think that working from home is equivalent to plopping down on the couch, staying in your pajamas all day, and doing a little work while you catch up on your favorite shows. Any entrepreneur who has started a business in the home while working a full-time job will tell you that’s far from the truth.

Starting a business from home usually requires people to have a separate workspace. Creating a workspace within your home helps to ensure that you can separate work-life from home-life, stay focused, and keep all of your work in one space. Even if your house has a limited amount of space, you can still find a small area to dedicate as your ‘office’. You’ll want to make sure you avoid working from the couch or bed as much as you can.

3. Limit distractions at home

Your side hustle may give you the opportunity to work at home, but you may not realize how difficult it can be to do so effectively. Take time to notice what keeps you from focusing on work at home and create an environment that helps you avoid those distractions.

If loud noise prevents you from working, consider how you can limit noise. Many people struggle working when they hear things like a ticking fan, a faulty HVAC system, or the tv. If you fall into that category of people, make it a priority to schedule repairs for broken appliances and only turn your TV during non-working hours.

4. Figure out when you’re most productive

Everyone has different learning styles and works best at certain times of the day. When you commit to growing your side hustle, it will be even more valuable to understand what it takes for you to work the best. You’ll want to recognize the time of day you’re most productive for certain tasks.

If your work requires creativity, try to gauge the time of day that you feel most creative. If you work better in the mornings, wake up early and find a quiet place in your house to get things done. If you’re a night owl, be sure to carve out some time in the evening to work. This will help you choose how to schedule your day and when to tackle certain tasks.

5. Stay positive and enjoy the process

Growing your side hustle should be an exciting, fun experience, especially if it’s something you’re passionate about. If you stay persistent and persevere, you may be able to turn your side hustle into a full-time job. Try to keep a positive attitude and recognize the value of all the lessons you’ll learn along the way.
