One of the most important websites management aspects is to know the ways to reinstall WordPress. You need these techniques to fix unknown errors on your interface. Reinstallation also comes in handy for people looking to start things over and need a clean slate to begin. Beginners who are learning to migrate HTML website to WordPress or switch from other formats must know about such procedures too. These methods are suitable for all kind of users. There is a way for people looking to reinstall the core files without losing their existing content. At the same time, there is another method for users who want to remove everything and install a fresh version.
Important Precaution To Take
It is essential that you take a backup of your website before using any of the techniques. Doing this will ensure that a copy of your interface remains available in case things go wrong during the process. In fact, WordPress users must install a backup plugin right after creating their interface. This will automate the process of backup creation and make sure that their valuable content is protected.
Let’s now take a look at the different methods to conduct the reinstallation.
1. Reinstalling Through The Admin Dashboard
An easy and straightforward way to conduct the process is by using the admin dashboard of your website. The dashboard provides an easy and intuitive way to carry out all website management tasks. In case, you are able to access the control panel, do so through your username and password. In the menu on the left-hand side, locate the “Updates” section. When you click on the link, a new screen titled “WordPress Updates” will open. On this page, you will see a button named “Re-install Now”. Just hit the tab and the latest version of the CMS will be downloaded and installed.
This is one of the simplest ways to do the re-installation which does not involve any technicalities.
2. Manual Reinstallation Through FTP
The admin dashboard can be rendered inaccessible due to some errors. In such situations, you must know about this reinstallation process through FTP. Let’s take a look at the different steps involved in this method.
Step 1: Download WordPress
Visit the WordPress.org website and locate the “Get WordPress” button in the top, right-hand corner. Click on it to download the core files of the CMS.
Step 2: Extract The ZIP File
You will have to extract the ZIP file and save its contents to your system. Once the extraction is complete, locate and delete the “wp-content” folder. It is essential to do so otherwise you may lose the existing content.
Step 3: Upload All Files Except “wp-content” Folder
Now connect to your hosting account through an FTP client and upload all the other remaining files. These files must be uploaded to the folder which where the original WordPress installation was made. Generally, the root folder named as “public” or “public_html” is used for this purpose. When you start uploading, a prompt with the message “target file already exists” will appear. Choose the option to overwrite the old files and proceed.
This will install a fresh version of the core files of the CMS. As you had already deleted the “wp-content” folder, your existing themes and plugins will not be affected. This is one of the most effective ways to reinstall WordPress.
3. Using WP-CLI To Reinstall WordPress
WP-CLI is the command line interface that allows users to manage their installation without needing to access a browser. The tool can be used for updating plugins and managing multisite installs. People can add or delete posts, categories or users with its help. They can also use it to insert test data or search and replace items in the database. It can also be used to download the core files of the open source platform. Enter the following command through the interface and a fresh version will be re-installed without affecting current themes and plugins.
wp core download –skip-content –force
The WP-CLI command line tool is supported by all major dedicated WordPress hosting services.
4. Complete Re-installation Of WordPress
Please note that using this method will install a completely fresh version and delete all the existing content permanently. The following steps are involved in the process:
Step 1: Delete Existing WordPress Files
Access the folder of your current installation through FTP or the cPanel file manager. Select all the files present in it and delete them.
Deleting the WordPress database is not necessary but if you wish to do so, it can be done by accessing “MySQL Databases” in the cPanel.
You can also use phpMyAdmin and drop the database for the same purpose.
Step 2: Install WordPress
You must now install WordPress through a preferred method. People have the choice to use the one-click auto-installation feature of dedicated WordPress hosting services. They can also do the process manually in 5 minutes by downloading the files from WordPress.org.
Once you complete the installation, you will have a completely fresh version over which you can build a new interface.
People must choose one of the above-mentioned ways to reinstall WordPress depending on their requirement. They must never forget to take a backup of their interface before conducting the re-installation process.
